Why it matters

Gum disease doesn't
wait. Most people do.

It causes no pain in its early stages. By the time most patients notice something is wrong, significant — and sometimes irreversible — damage has already occurred.

01

Silent by nature

Gum disease rarely announces itself. Bleeding, tenderness, or a subtle change in your smile are easy to dismiss — but they are your body signalling that something needs attention.

02

Progressive without intervention

Untreated, it destroys the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. This bone loss is irreversible. But the disease itself — at almost any stage — can be halted with specialist care.

03

Wider than your mouth

Research firmly links gum disease to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and complications in pregnancy. Treating it is whole-body care, not just dental care.

What to expect

Your initial
consultation

Every consultation follows a comprehensive clinical framework — so you leave with a full picture of your gum health and a clear path forward.

01

History & assessment

We begin with a thorough review of your medical and dental history. Detailed measurements are then taken from around each tooth to assess the health of the surrounding gums — recording the presence of bleeding, gum recession and any tooth mobility.

02

Pocket depth & radiographs

In health, the space between tooth and gum is no more than 3mm. Where gum disease is present, this pocket can be significantly deeper. Radiographs are also taken to assess the level of bone support remaining around your teeth.

03

Diagnosis & treatment plan

Following examination, your findings are analysed and a diagnosis made. We'll then discuss the treatment options available to you, including the prognosis for your teeth and the cost of treatment — clearly and without pressure.

"I was quite anxious about my first treatment, but found the laser treatment was painless after the injection. I felt no discomfort and was able to eat and drink normally after a couple of hours."

"The team explained everything clearly and I felt completely at ease. The difference in my gums after just a few appointments was remarkable. Wish I'd come sooner."

Questions

What patients ask us

Gum disease affects around half of UK adults to some degree. It's often called a "silent epidemic" because it progresses without obvious pain until damage is already done. Regular specialist monitoring is the most effective way to catch it early.
Absolutely. Gum disease is frequently painless — especially in its early and intermediate stages. The absence of pain is one of the main reasons it's discovered late. If you have any of the warning signs listed above, a specialist assessment is strongly recommended even if you feel completely fine.
A hygienist cleans the surfaces of your teeth and gum line. A specialist periodontist diagnoses and treats disease extending below the gum line — including deep cleaning of periodontal pockets, surgical interventions, bone and gum grafting, and long-term management. At Pure Periodontics, every appointment is led by a GDC-registered Specialist Periodontist.
Your consultation begins with a review of your medical and dental history. We then take detailed measurements around each tooth, record bleeding, recession and mobility, and take radiographs to assess bone support. The findings are analysed and we'll discuss diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis, and costs — clearly and without pressure.
Research firmly links gum disease to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, respiratory conditions, and complications in pregnancy. The bacteria responsible can enter the bloodstream and trigger systemic inflammation. Treating gum disease is whole-body care, not just dental care.
Gum tissue that has receded won't regrow on its own — but specialist procedures including soft tissue grafting can effectively restore the gum line. Results are often excellent. The key is acting before recession becomes severe.
